The MAX232 is a widely used serial level converter IC designed to bridge communication between TTL/CMOS logic devices (0–5V) and RS232-compatible systems (+25V to –25V). This SMD SOIC-16 version integrates dual drivers and receivers along with an internal capacitive voltage generator, enabling reliable RS232 signal generation from a single 5V supply—no external high-voltage supply required.
Each receiver can accept up to ±30V RS232 signals, converting them safely to TTL/CMOS logic levels, while each driver converts MCU logic level signals into proper RS232 levels. This makes the MAX232 an essential interface IC for microcontrollers communicating with PCs, USB-serial adapters, modems, and other RS232-based equipment.
