The MAX232N from Texas Instruments is a widely used dual RS-232 line driver/receiver designed to convert RS-232 signal levels to standard 5V TTL/CMOS logic and vice-versa. Operating from a single 5V supply, this device integrates two drivers and two receivers, enabling full bi-directional serial communication between microcontrollers and RS-232 interfaces.
The MAX232N features an onboard charge-pump voltage converter, generating the required ±9V RS-232 signal levels using just four external 1µF capacitors, eliminating the need for dual power supplies. Supporting data transfer rates up to 120 kbps, this IC is suitable for UART interfaces, embedded systems, industrial control devices, and legacy serial equipment.
Packaged in a standard 16-pin PDIP through-hole form factor, the MAX232N is easy to integrate into prototyping boards, educational systems, and long-term hardware installations. This commercial-grade variant operates from 0°C to +70°C.
