The TM1638 from Titan Micro Electronics is a versatile LED driver and key-scan controller IC, designed to minimize microcontroller I/O usage while driving multi-digit displays and reading keyboard inputs. Packaged in a SOP-28 (300 mil) surface-mount package, the TM1638 is widely used in control panels, DIY electronics, digital dashboards, home appliances, and display/keypad combination modules.
Supporting 8 segments × 8 bits, the TM1638 can control up to 64 LEDs, enabling configurations such as 8-digit 7-segment displays or 8×8 LED matrices. It also integrates an 8×3 key scan interface, allowing up to 24 independent keys to be detected directly by the IC without additional components.
Communication requires only three microcontroller pins (STB, CLK, DIO), significantly reducing wiring and firmware complexity. With an operating voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V, the TM1638 includes 8-level brightness adjustment, a built-in 450kHz RC oscillator, and an internal power-on reset to ensure stable operation.
