The 74HC595 from NXP is a high-speed, low-power 8-bit serial-in, serial/parallel-out shift register with a storage register and 3-state outputs. Built using advanced CMOS technology and fully JEDEC-compliant, this device is ideal for applications requiring efficient I/O expansion such as LED displays, keypads, digital drivers, and microcontroller interfaces.
The IC features separate shift and storage register clocks, allowing precise control of data movement. Data shifts on the positive edge of SHCP, and simultaneously, data is latched to outputs using STCP. When both clocks are tied together, the output register updates one cycle behind the shift register, ensuring synchronized operation. With a typical 100MHz shift frequency, it enables fast serial-to-parallel conversion.
The 74HC595 includes an active-LOW asynchronous reset, 8 parallel outputs, and a serial output for cascading multiple ICs, making it suitable for systems requiring expanded output capability.
