The DRV8825 Stepper Motor Driver Module is a heavy-duty drop-in upgrade over the standard A4988, delivering higher power, smoother motion, and advanced thermal management. Built on a robust 4-layer PCB for superior heat dissipation, it handles high-torque NEMA 17 and light NEMA 23 stepper motors with 1/32 microstepping for whisper-quiet, hyper-precise operation. Each module includes a high-conductivity aluminium heatsink with pre-applied thermal adhesive tape.
Controlled via just STEP and DIR pins, the DRV8825 interfaces seamlessly with both 3.3V (ESP32, ARM) and 5V (Arduino Uno/Mega) microcontrollers, with comprehensive fault protection against over-current, short circuits, UVLO, and over-temperature conditions.
Key Specifications
- Motor Supply Voltage (VMOT): 8.2V to 45V DC
- Logic Voltage: 2.5V to 5.25V DC
- Continuous Current per Phase: 1.5A (without forced air)
- Maximum Current per Phase: 2.2A (with heatsink + active cooling)
- Microstep Resolutions: Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32
- PCB Layers: 4-layer (enhanced thermal management)
- Form Factor: 16-pin DIP (RAMPS 1.4, CNC Shield v3 compatible)
- Logic Compatibility: 3.3V and 5V
- Protection: Over-current, short circuit, UVLO, over-temperature
DRV8825 vs A4988 Comparison
- Max Microstepping: 1/32 (DRV8825) vs 1/16 (A4988)
- Max Motor Voltage: 45V (DRV8825) vs 35V (A4988)
- Max Current: 2.2A (DRV8825) vs 2.0A (A4988)
- Potentiometer Location: Opposite side of pins for safer adjustment
Important: The DRV8825 shares the same pinout footprint as the A4988 but must be installed in the reverse orientation. Always match the GND and DIR pins to your board markings. Never connect or disconnect a stepper motor while powered — this causes permanent IC damage. Always place a 100µF decoupling capacitor across VMOT and GND.
Applications
- FDM 3D printers (RAMPS 1.4, Prusa i3, RepRap) for high-torque NEMA 17 motor control
- Desktop CNC routers and laser engravers requiring higher current and smoother motion than A4988
- NEMA 23 light-duty stepper motor applications in automation and robotics
- Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi precision positioning systems
